Nitra Castle can be recommended as a tip for a nice and really cheap trip during your holiday in Slovakia. It rises on a hill above the city of Nitra.
The best view on the castle is from Nitra square. It is the most important and most characteristic building complex of the city.
Nitra Castle is one of the oldest fortified settlements in Slovakia. Nitra castle was of strategic importance because it was natural fortress above the meander of the river Nitra. The castle is fortified by massive walls, built in the times of the Turkish threat in the 15th century.
The original castle was built on the site of an older Slavic princely fortress of 9 century. The first written mention of the castle dates from the year 871. In the 11th century the Castle of Nitra was a county castle. From 12 century it became a bishop's residence. The oldest preserved castle building is the Romanesque church of St. Emmeram of 11 century, which became part of a Gothic church that was built later.
In 1432 the Hussites occupied the castle of Nitra and in 17 century the Turks. In the 14th century was built a large Gothic cathedral and palace here. Constantly rebuilding of the castle completely disguised its original appearance. Only part of the Romanesque church of St. Emmeram, from the Gothic period and part of the castle walls and large Gothic church remained. In relatively good condition are preserved buildings from the late 17th and 18 century.
The current appearance of the castle is the result of modifications during years 1732-1739. On the Gothic Bishop's Palace was retained window above the rocky cliffs on the northern side. Representational room on the first floor was adapted and arranged in the early 19th century in Empire style.
The castle is now the seat of the Nitra diocese. The whole area of Nitra castle is a national monument. At the castle also houses the Archaeological Institute. Nitra castle is not open to the public except the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum.
