The first written mention of the Fiakovo Castle dates back to 1242, which mentions it as one of the 17 castles that survived Tartar raids.

In 1423 Fiľakovo obtained town privileges. Turks in 1554 with help of a treason seized the castle, and thus was defined fate of Novohrad and surrounding counties for a period of 39 years.

Turks joined this region to the Turkish Empire as a new Fiľakovo Sandzak. In the 17th century the castle and the city was the most important part of Novohrad and its military and political importance was increasing day by day.

In 1678 Fiľakovo was attacked by the Turkish-Kuruc troops, but the city and castle was not conquested In 1682 the troops returned to Fiľakovo and this year formed the fate of the city in the future. The whole city was completely razed to the ground.

Currently, welcomes the visitors to the castle museum with a permanent exhibition "Centuries of the Fiľakovo Castle" and temporary exhibitions in a renovated Bebeks bastion.

Collection of valuable exhibits introduces visitors to the history of the castle and the town, but it also includes paleontological and archaeological findings from castle hill and surrounding villages. In the castle complex is built an information trail.
