MaláFatra is situated in the northern part of Slovakia and the flow of the river Váh divided it into two basic subdivisions - Krivánska and Lúčanská Malá Fatra.
Krivánska part of Malá Fatra was for its natural values declared in 1967 a Protected Landscape Area. In 1988 it became a national park.
This mountain range is a very popular tourist, ski mountaineering and skiing area. It is known by number of gorges, waterfalls and characteristic peaks as Malý and Veľký Rozsutec, Veľký Kriváň, Stoh, Kľak, or Minčol. The highest point is Veľký Krivan with a height of 1709 m.
The most popular alpine hikes include crossing the main ridge of Malá Fatra. This hike ss possible in summer and winter. It offers beautiful nature with unique views and the legendary Malá Fatra inversion. A popular stop are Chata pod Chlebom and Chata pod Suchým chalets with permanent staff and refresh/overnight possibility.
In Malá Fatra are also fairly well established ski resorts with ski lifts and cable cars. The mountains are well marked and interesting tours can be taken out of Terchová and štefanová villages, such as a system of waterfalls called Jánošíkove diery. The attractions include Šútovský waterfall with a height of almost 40 meters.
