Despite several attempts to set up a museum in Prešov before the First World War and the interwar period, it was established in 1945. It was founded as a city museum, but already in 1950 obtained the status of a Regional Museum. It is located in Rákoci palace, which history is closely linked with the history of the city.
The most significant events in the history of the palace took place at the time of the Hungarian nobility uprisings against the Habsburgs in the 17th century and early 18th century. It is a splendid Renaissance building, which was built by the end of the 16th century in place of two Gothic single-storey houses by Sigismund Rákóczi.
The castle represents urban jewel of Renaissance architecture in Slovakia and former Upper Hungary.
Opportunity for first exhibition about the history of the city of Prešov was 700 anniversary of the first written mention of Prešov (1247 ) in 1947. It was installed in the building of arts,in one of the bastions of the fortifications.
This exhibition began more than 65 years long history of rich presentation, scientific, collection, educational and methodical activities of the Museum.
Museum preserves and presents archaeological, historical, ethnographic, art- historical and natural science collections.
