In Slovakia, there are a few cities that can offer such a treasure of
immovable and movable monuments like Bardejov. This area is the contact area of two major world cultures: West of the Western Roman - and Eastern - the Byzantine, which overlap each other.
Important role in the preservation, conservation and presentation of these sites covers Šariš Museum at Bardejov. Scope of its collections, the results of technical work far beyond the borders of the region it ranks among the most important institutions of its kind in Slovakia. In its museum network is also belongs to the oldest ones.
The idea to create a museum, cames from 1897, but it was founded on 21. December 1903 as the Museum of Šariš County. After 1945, the museum began to shape up as a homeland museum, aimed to document the development of nature and society from prehistory to the present and to the districts Bardejov, Giraltovce , Stropkov and Svidník. Since 1950 it is focused on documentation of Bardejov city reservation.
In the present it documents the historical, natural and social conditions of the region of Upper Šariš. It has nationwide scope of the iconographic documentation of the Eastern Rite. It manages more than 700 000 objects from various fields of museum work. For this extensive museum activity it gradually gained in addition to the historic town hall also other buildings.
Šariš Museum during its previous existence many years deeply affected the development of Slovak museums and became an integral part of the cultural life of Bardejov and surrounding region. A museum with valuable historical, ethnical, science and art exhibitions is among the Slovak museums that seek slovak and foreign visitors as well. It is also indicated by the results of visit number of the museum. Visits annually, on average are around 60,000 domestic and foreign admirers.
