Vlkolínec is a village, reservation of folk architecture, under the protection of UNESCO, which visit during your trip to Slovakia you should not miss.

Unique is a particularly the folk character of the village, that is situalted near Ružomberok. Vlkolínec is a picturesque village at the foot of the Veľá Fatra, which is since 1977 conservation area of folk architecture. In 1993 this ara was added to Cultural World Heritage List of UNESCO. The vilalge is a part of Ružomberok.

Unlike open-air museums Vlkolínec is still permanently inhabited. Therefore a tour into the individual objects is not possible - open is only one house, where there is located a furnishings exhibition. The tour thus primarily consists of walking through the village with a unique atmosphere that is complemented by a beautiful landscape of the Veľká Fatra mountains.

The first written mention of the village Vlkolínec is from 1376. Its name refers to the frequent occurrence of wolves ("vlk" in slovak) in this area. In 1825, 334 people lived here. Currently, 35 people live here and there are 45 folk architecturen objects located in the village - mostly traditionaal log houses. During the 2nd World War II, in 1944, there was a fire in the village, which  destroyed part of the houses.

Vlkolínec is easily accessible by car from road E77 from Ružomberok - Biely Potok direction. The road is very narrow and in the end it has quite a big slope. When snow covers it, you will definitely need wheel chains, if it will possible to use this path at all.

Another option is to walk from the main road on foot on yellow marked tourist trail, which takes about 40 minutes. Vlkolínec also reachable by a quick descent from the famous ski resort Malinô Brdo above Ružomberok.
