Košice region

  • Borša

    Borša is attractive mainly because of the local manor house. Francis Rákóczi II - a significant figure in the history of Slovakia was born in here. Borša is located near the Klin nad Bodrogom - the lowest lying village in Slovakia with 94 m elevation.

  • Betliar

    In the village of Betliar is situated eponymous castle, which belongs to the most beautiful in Slovakia. It was built in location of Bebeks castle. Later it was rebuilt several times and at the end of the 19th century got the present form rich hunting lodge of Andrássy family, who resided in Krásna Hôrka. The most valuable artifact of the lodge is a library with reportedly up to 20,000 books and a collection of exotic objects from Africa and Asia. Behind the manor house is situated a beautiful park.

  • Herľany

    Herľany famous local cold geyser, which every 32-34 hours erupts about 600 hl of water up to 20 meters. Water flows from a borehole 405 meters deep. The spring was drilled in 1870.

  • Jasov

    Jasov attracts tourists mainly due Jasovská cave, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, there is located here Baroque monastery complex with a beautiful garden.

  • Košice

    Košice was founded in the 13th century. This city is rich in historical monuments, which are concentrated in the Hlavné námestie square, which, together with the associated environment was declared a reservation. Monument of national importance is the Dóm of St. Elizabeth, situated in the middle of the square. It is the most important Gothic building in Slovakia. The tower of it serves as an observation deck. During the summer music program is performed near the Singing fountain, located between the Dóm of St. Elizabeth, Urban's Tower and Theatre of J. Borodáč. Additional valuable monuments include Forgach Palace, Rákoczi Palace, Csáky-Dessewffy Palace, Jakab Palace, Levoča house, the former Town Hall, Stoličný house, Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit church with a monastery, Mikluš prison. In the city fortifications preserved Executioner's Bastion. Interesting attraction is Zoo in Kavečany and the dam Bukovec, a popular water sport destination. Train pulled by a steam locomotive is a nice attraction for families with children who decide to visit Čermeľské údolie valley. Attraction is also ALPINKA hut located in this valley.

  • Krásnohorske Podhradie

    Village Krásnohorske Podhradie is especially famous for its beautiful Krásna Hôrka castle. It is one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Slovakia. The castle is located on a hill above the mentioned village and was built in the early 14th century as the residence of the noble family Bebek. In the 16th century the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress. In 1817 the castle burnt down, but was rebuilt and its owners – the Andrássy family established a museum here. There is also a glass coffin with the mummified remains of Žofia Serédy - the main character of the novel White lady of Levoča, that was written by M. Jókai. She was the wife of General Stephen Kuruc Andrassy. In the nerby park a mausoleum with remains Dionysus and Frances Andrassy is located.

  • Leles

    Leles village was once a religious center of  lower Zemplín area. There was a monastery built over here. Inside the monastery are located remarkable Gothic paintings from the 14th century.

  • Medzev

    Medzev is a city with ancient mining tradition. There was processed iron ore over here in the past, mills were buil and related crafts emerged. There is a museum related iron industry located here.

  • Michalovce

    Michalovce is the most important administrative center of lower Zemplín area. The park at the local manor house hides pre-Romanesque rotunda foundations. The remains of the castle from the water 13 century were incorporated into baroque-classicist manor house. Zemplínske Museum resides here at the present. Near Michalovce is located one of the main centers of vacation in Slovakia - Zemplínska Šírava reservoir.

  • Relax center Plejsy

    Ski Resort Relax Center Plejsy is located near Krompachy, only 45 km away from Košice. It is the only 4-star ski resort in Eastern Slovakia, with ski season lasting on average of 123 days with 10 km of ski runs of varying difficulty.

  • Rožňava

    Rožňava is an important administrative center. The Slaná river flows through the city. Řožňava has been affected by mining, particularly gold mining, which the city owes economic development. In the city has still preserved historic footprint and also many sights.  The city center is formed by Námestie Baníkov square. Here is located the city tower and the baroque church of 17 century. In addition, valuable baroque cathedral and the Franciscan church and monastery, as well as Bishops residence is located here. Valuable sight is as well the town hall building. Mining exposure can be viewed  in the Mining Museum. Rožňava is also the entry point to the Slovak Karst.

  • Štítnik

    Štítnik is remarkable by the earliest records of mining activities in the area of iron ore in Hungary. Once it was economically well developed city. Extremely valuable medieval wall paintings can be admired in the local church of 14 century. In addition, it is the place, where the oldest organ in Slovakia can be found.

  • Svinica

    The main attraction of the village is Svinica Romanesque church of the 13th century with medieval wall paintings.

  • Trebišov

    Trebišov is aministratívne center south of the lower Zemplín area. Historically remarkable is the ruin of castle Parič. At its foundation was built baroque-classical mansion - now the seat of the Regional Museum. In addition, Andrássy Mausoleum is very valuable.

  • Vinné

    Village of Vinné attracts vacationers with its Vinianske lake. In addition,  Renaissance mansion of 17 century and the ruins of the castle of 13 century are located here.

  • Zemplínska Šírava

    Zemplínska Šírava Reservoir is well known recreational area in eastern Slovakia and it is one of the classic vacation destination of the country. It is located near the town of Michalovce. It belongs to the warmest areas and it is the second largest water area in Slovakia. In the northern part of the reservoir are situated the main vacation centers Kaluža and Hôrka.
